The Year of Disquiet
Broadcast January 2021
During the midst of the covid lockdown when live events were banned and The White Hotel was shuttered we redirected our artistic output online and I co-produced and contributed poems to a film I titled
The Year of Disquiet (a play on Pessoa's The Book of Disquiet).
We worked with musicians from CURL, Manchester Collective and Several Wives to record live performances in the deserted venue; the smoke and lights still in full White Hotel effect, the artists still doing exactly what artists do but in an eerily barren venue devoid of the magic of an audience.
I was keen to have my words read from a member of the cohort who had been impacted most by the period - the elderly (I lost my last grandparent myself during this period), and was so pleased to have the 89 year old Doreen Beach (of Blackpool, England) voice these cine-poems so well.
